Melanie Clare qualified as a journeyman decorative painter with the Waterways Craft Guild and is based in Lincolnshire, working to maintain the tradition of canal art on and around the waterways of Britain. Melanie adheres to the colours and motifs of this unique art form, known as ‘Roses and Castles’, and specialises in decorative doors, panels and ancillary objects for boats and homes. Always finding ways to bring canal art to new audiences, in 2019 Melanie worked with garden designer Mark Gregory to create a collection of decorative pieces for inclusion in his award winning ‘Welcome to Yorkshire Lock Keeper’s Garden’ at the Chelsea Flower Show followed by an exhibition of her work throughout the summer at the Standedge Tunnel Visitors Centre.
Previously Melanie has used canal art as the basis for other community projects including the Lincoln Barons trail in 2015 and a mural depicting the changes of the seasons at a Lincolnshire nursery school. Melanie also collaborated with Harbour Place in Grimsby to create a mural as part of the redecoration of their community room.
